Foam packaging guide

What is XLPE foam and where is it used?

XLPE foam is a cross-linked polyethylene foam: its polymer chains are chemically bonded into a fine, uniform closed-cell structure. The result is a smoother, stronger and more durable foam than standard PE foam.

What does cross-linked mean?

In cross-linked polyethylene, the long polymer chains are joined to each other by chemical or radiation cross-linking during production. This network makes the cells smaller and more even, which improves tensile strength, surface finish and resistance to heat and chemicals.

How is XLPE different from standard PE foam?

Standard PE foam has larger cells and a slightly coarser surface. XLPE has a finer, skin-like surface, a cleaner cut edge and better dimensional stability. That makes XLPE the preferred material for visible inserts, premium cases and parts that must look as good as they protect.

Where is XLPE foam used?

XLPE is used for premium tool and instrument cases, automotive interior and insulation parts, sports and floor mats, medical packaging and thermal or acoustic insulation layers. It is available in many colours, so inserts can follow a brand colour or mark tool positions.

When is XLPE not necessary?

For hidden internal packaging where appearance does not matter, standard PE foam usually protects just as well at a lower cost. Choose XLPE when surface finish, colour, precise detail or long service life matter.
